President Trump dropped his 2027 budget earlier this month, a document that outlines Republicans’ priorities headed into November’s midterm elections.

The upshot: Trump wants massive new defense spending with a 10-percent cut to other programs. That includes totally eliminating the federal program that helps low-income families heat their homes, cuts to NIH and public health programs, and clawing back money for infrastructure and climate initiatives.

Budgets are my bread and butter on the White House beat. I need to know what’s in every line of this document, just like I needed to know every section of the One Big Beautiful Bill. I get asked pretty frequently how I memorize it, and I’m going to let you in on a little secret.

I don’t.

I do this instead: I make massive charts or data tables of every line item in a bill or budget. They become extensions of my notebook. They live in my Chrome bookmarks bar. They become quarries for hidden story ideas.

So I now present to you: Everything in the Trump administration’s fiscal 2027 budget proposal. These line items are sometimes for brand new programs — the America First Opportunity Fund is a good example — and sometimes for additional funding above (or below) last year’s budget level. An example: Customs and Border Protection.

There are other line items for which the White House budget office does not include a specific sum. Example: “Critical munitions,” which the Defense Department wants money to fill up, but for which the administration does not provide a concrete dollar amount.
